Slaves of Shangrila are either brought in by their owner when cross the
Portal, or arrive with a caravan, captured by Slavers Guild's Barons, or yet
again, were born into slavery in Shangrila itself, or were destituted from
freedom for crimes committed against the city.
There are two different classes of owners: Denizens or Citizens, who
are allowed to own only one pet at any time, while Masters or Mistresses are
allowed to own as many slaves as they wish. A pet is the nickname given to the
slave of a Citizen/Denizen, but its status of slave isn't changed by this term
of endearment. When a slave belonging to a Master is sold to a Citizen, it
becomes known as a pet, while when a Citizen sells his pet to a Master, it
is once again known as a slave.
